Thinking of becoming a Governor?

A Message from Nick Riddler (LA Governor)

I joined Kendall CE Primary School as a Local Authority Governor late in the school year of 2015. It is my first Governors role, and I am completely new to the Education sector. The reasons behind wanting to undertake this challenge is due to moving to Colchester, and always wanting to give back to the community, my workplace encouraged taking a Governor role to support our local school so I took up this challenge.

The first point to make is that someone looking to join the Governing body is not expected to be the finished article, there are numerous training course and colleagues available to support your individual needs. The most important aspect is to show encouragement and make time to really learn about the school, what the children are doing and identify key areas where improvements can be made to create a fantastic learning environment for the children.

I think the Governor role is an exciting opportunity for anyone with an interest in the local community, or an interest in children's education to get involved, make real decisions and provide help and clarity for a school which, over the last year has made real improvements thanks to the fantastic leadership team in place. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a challenge, and has some time to spare and wants to make that difference to the local community.
